Thomas Newman, 36, is wanted by Vancouver police for the alleged theft of a car from a woman he met on a dating website. (Vancouver Police Department)Vancouver police are issuing a warning about a man who allegedly steals a woman's heart and then steals her car.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Thomas James Newman who is accused of using a dating website to meet a woman Jan. 9 and then making off with her vehicle, Const. Jana McGuinness said in a release Friday.
McGuinness said Newman, 36, has a criminal record and might be linked to at least five other similar cases.
She said the man responsible for the thefts uses charm to lure his victims.
"He's quite unassuming," said McGuinness. "He gives his full name, by all accounts. He goes out on dates with women and they find out that certain items are missing after the dates are over."
Newman is now wanted on a warrant for theft over $5,000.
He has not been convicted of any of the offences McGuinness referred to Friday.
McGuinness advises women always to arrange meetings in public and take their time getting to know their dates.
Anyone who knows Newman's whereabouts is asked to contact Vancouver police or Crime Stoppers.
