I was talking with my father yesterday and he feels that chivalry is dead and that the younger generation is getting less considerate and more rude (mine included and I am now 40). From a womans point of view do you think this is true in your recent experiences and if so why?

I think it is getting scarce because half the kids are not being raised by either parent. Most families these days need 2 incomes to make ends meet(especially if there are more than one child)Therefore, the kids are being raised by babysitters or in childcare until they are at the legal age to stay by themselves.I just don't think there is very much family time these days. Another thing is alot of kids these days think it is cool to be rude.Alot of movies are out and tv shows that make it look cool to be an ass hole to someone. And, yet another guess is SOME parents don't decipline thier kids.

It hasn't been the same since the bra burning days -many women actually find it demeaning (pulling their chair out, opening doors for them, etc....)

Unfortunate, but true - that is why when a man pulls out my chair or opens a door for me - I am sold! Chivalry is good to have I think - it shows your partner respect and appreciation.....today's generation have no respect - that is the problem....

Steve, Your dad has a point, sadly. Respect, appreciation, and even good manners is rather uncommon more and more. Since I teach, I have seen it more and more. I agree with some of the others on here, children have less time with their parents, less good role models in general to learn from, and they also model their brothers and sisters, who may be the ones babysitting them, etc. When a man pulls out my chair or opens the door for me, I smile and say, " thank you".

I was often amazed when people commented on my childrens manners. They always said please and thank you, held doors for people and just generally acted like nice people. It was expected and demanded of them. I could never understand why people were surprised when my children exhibited good behavior. I guess too many people raising children dont expect things from their kids, so the kids live up to those expectations. I guess what I am saying is , No chivalry isnt dead But its on the endangered species list.

I'm just wondering what happened to good, old fashioned manners. Maybe the answer is in the term "old fashioned", but the truly great things like good manners, are never out of date. I will open, or hold open a door for anyone, doesn't matter if they are male or female, it's just good manners. I will pick up stuff if someone drops it, I will always pull out a chair for my date .... it's just GOOD MANNERS!

my granddaughter's first words were to grandpa when he asked if she wanted out of the car "yes, please." and my grandson was the same way....we never had to push him to say please and thank you.

Yup Yup! Thats how Mom raised us.When i started dating again and was opening doors, something i don't even think about when doing, the women i was with loved it and were basically shocked. Kinda sad.And these kids today make me want to knock the fuck out of them. Last night my daughters and i went to a local frozen yogurt place and while sitting there enjoying the goodies three teen boys came in and asked for quarters to plat this stupid quarter game. The gyoung ladt behind the counter said she was not allowed to give out quarters unless they buy something. This kid (16-18) yrs old and his two friends start shit with her and start to get loud and obnoxious , cursing and shit. The one grabs this donation can of money on the counter for a local girl with cancer and starts to open it up. I was on him so fucking fast. My daughters are freaking out. I mean , wtf! Who does that? As i look around everyone in this place looks down as if they don't even want to be bothered. Just hit me way wrong.I work with that boys dad and i soooo hope he says something...

My parents always taught me and my brothers and sister to use our manners. Even now, I'll say, "Yes sir/No sir" or, "Yes ma'am/No ma'am". When people are shocked I do something like that I say that's the way my parents raised me. I am proud that I try to use manners and be courteous (sp?) to people, espically women. I don't think chivalry is dead; but I think it's dying and really needs to make a comeback. Our society (IMO) is becoming more coarse and distant from each other. With things like the internet, people don't talk face-to-face like they used to. Now they talk via texting, through chat rooms, on the phone (or here on these forums ;)). Whatever happened to talking face-to-face??

If your definition of 'women' is us wanting to dominate men, it is because women don't take a fool like you seriously and never will! If that makes us domineering cunts (using your language) then that is exactly what we are!!!!!!! And bloody proud of it!

You had to go and ask that question Steve ... now we're gonna hear about his mother's house and his mothers vehicles and his mothers boat and all that crap about him being an aeronautical engineer .... he's been calling himself one ever since his mommy taught him how to make a paper airplane.

From a womans point of view do you think this is true in your recent experiences and if so why? Chiv arly is dead. Why? Who knows. Bad parenting? Social/economic changes between men and women? The constant degrading of women in advertising/movies/ect? Maybe? I don't know the answer, but when was the last time you saw a commercial where two men are discussing that not-so-fresh feeling? LOL

This is certainly an interesting topic, but I don't believe that chivalry is dead, at least among some contingents of the population. It seems that courtesy and respect are more outwardly prevalent in rural america, at least in the area I grew up, and from noticing the behaviors of those I meet... I agree that the onus falls on parents for teaching of morals, as my parents were adamant in the necessity of leading a virtuous life, both through their opinions as well as their treatment of others, and this has been passed on to siblings and myself, at least I would like to think. Socially, you would have to look at the sexual revolution of the 60's as a time when the ideas of chivalry were vigorously campaigned against, mainly because of the inherent (if not intentional) connotation that chivalry implies that the fairer sex is in need of assistance from men. This was certainly not in line with feminist thinking of the time, and to a certain extent over the years, has now become expanded into general liberal dogma. Is it a bad thing? Well, maybe yes and no. That's just my opinion, though, and there is more to it, especially considerations of socially acceptable behaviors, and, in particular, advertisement, where sex sells.. But, I would point back to the sexual revolution as a period which precipitated the allowance of these things in mainstream media.

I would pull out your chair for you...far enough way so that you fall on your FAT ass. As far as the door, I would make sure it would be an old door to no where 47 floors up on the sears tower in chicago, and drop you OUT of it. fucking cunt www.menarebetterth anwomen.com

I don't believe Chivalry is dead but I do believe it is dying. There are more and more disrespectful people due to societal changes that aren't for the good. Kids disrespect there parents (not all but more than there used to be) The music they listen to says it all. They listen to chanting about death and blood and killing. Disrespecting parents in a way that we as parents never would have thought. Morals are completely gone in a lot of society. Both Men and woman more and more do not respect each other. More riotous activity goes on with each up and coming generation. I would say that Chivalry is surely on it's way down the tubes.
